Bringing together paintings, posters, prints, drawings, cartoons, book illustrations and sculptures, this book explores issues of identity and migration via the German refugee artist experience in England. Refugees contains works by an array of both celebrated and lesser-known German-born refugee artists, principally from the Ben Uri Collection, but supplemented by a number of important works from public and private collections. AUTHORS: Sarah MacDougall, Head of Collections, and Rachel Dickson, Head of Curatorial Services, are co-curators at Ben Uri Gallery and Museum and have curated and published extensively on twentieth-century British artists of Jewish descent, and emigre artists in Britain, with a particular specialism on the ‘Whitechapel Boys’. MacDougall is Gertler’s biographer and cataloguer and Dickson has published extensively on Jacob Kramer.
