Description

‘I have a love for Croydon, it really is the Cronx! It’s exiting! Gnarley. I was in a crew called Tuff Stuff , based there, so I hung out there a lot.’ DJ Dek One continues, ‘I met Kevin from the Rise Gallery one day at an exhibition, and he said he was interested to meet old writers from the Croydon graffiti scene, but no one would talk to him as he was a bit posh.’ So I said, ‘they’ll talk to me.’ Th e next thing you know, I met the ‘All City’ shop crew, who were amazing and very passionate, and after tip offs we were climbing into warehouses and networking with oldschool writers (graffiti artists) and contacts with photos.’

Three years later, the culmination of their epic journey is Born in the Cronx, a unique archive of the Croydon graffiti scene, where a lot of the extraordinary artworks, and even some of the buildings, are now gone forever.

Author Bio

DJ Dek One is a DJ born in Birmingham, UK, that plays soul, funk, drum breaks and '90s hip hop. He started DJing in around 1993. He was part of the now legendary SWEAT funk nights which ran from 1993 to 1998 in Birmingham in the acid jazz days, where he started collecting the more obscure soul and funk 45s and has always played vinyl records, whether they are trendy or not. He is a member of the now worldwide UK chapter of the Bronx based b boy crew TBB, The Bronx Boys, est.1975 and a mother crew of the more famous Rock Steady Crew, which some original members became. He is also a member of the Breakmission team, the uks largest b boy weekender, based in Birmingham, which teaches kids the 4 elements of hip hop, as a way of distracting them from getting into trouble, an event which instead of charging money for entrance, asks the b boy community to bring a can of food or item of clothing instead which later gets distributed to Birmingham's homeless.
