Back on the Shelf: The World is Full of Single Women of a Certain Age
Back on the Shelf is the hilarious diary of a year in the life of Jacquie Whittaker, ‘a menopausal library assistant, divorcee, mother of three, living in an empty nest in Napier’. The diary, ‘not for anyone else’s eyes and cheaper than therapy’, begins with her desperate foray on to the dating scene where she meets a number of equally desperate and rather unsuitable men. In addition to struggling with wrinkles, push-up bras and turning 50, she is torn between her need to find an eligible new man and the needs of her dementia-stricken mother, her bossy sister, her pregnant daughter and last and certainly least, her ex-husband. But, by the end of the year an invitation to join an all-woman safari to Tanzania and her rather strange fascination with hippos lead to an unexpected romance. Could this be the real thing?
